An order was placed with Maldon Iron Works (Order No.2585) dated 27 May 1940 for a 7 inch arm. This order might not have been fulfilled as this was the period when signposts were being taken down in fear of German invasion. | The three
examples to the right all have cast arms but may not have any great
age. All, (with the exception of Great Maplestead (1) which is
crudely hand painted) have the lettering cast in. Other examples
of this type have been located on northwest Essex. No maker has
been positively attributed but the suggestion is that they were made
at the nearby Gestingthorpe foundry in the 1930s.
