| This selection of Dorset milestone pictures was supplied by John Tybjerg, the Dorset Local Group (The Dorset Milestoners) Coordinator for The Milestone Society. The majority of Dorset's milestones, about 200 of 226 known ones, are fairly plain and roughly hewn from local stone. Most are Purbeck Stone with some Portland Stone. Most have either a semi-circular, rounded or pointed top. An interesting collection of 10 mile posts around Sherborne seemed to have a very local design. Interestingly, none are further than three miles from Sherborne. However, the same design appears in neighbouring counties to the north. Although of cast iron, at first glance they could be mistaken for stone. Many of the milestones had attachment plates of a fairly common design in Dorset of which 21 remain. It is suspected that missing plates from stones were of the same or similar design. |
