There is very little original about this milepost.  For some inexplicable reason it is Grade II listed.  The main body is recent although the oval legends may have come from an earlier post.

I need to check the parish location as this stone may be in Gosfield or Sible Hedingham.  Although rather battered and with a loose top, the remaining lettering is very sharply defined. sible_hedingham-w.jpg (27378 bytes)

Unfortunately all is not as is seems.  This cast iron example suffered severe damage in the past and the back is now filled with concrete to hold it together.  Missing parts of the plate (upper left and part of the lower right) are smoothed cement. Losses.

The Ordnance Survey Explorer map (Sheet 195) shows another four milestones along this route.  They were one mile west of Earls Colne; one mile east of Halstead; half a mile north west of Halstead and one marked at Great Yeldham.  Two were recorded for Great Yeldham in 1970.  Extensive searches proved fruitless and it must now be assumed that they are all lost.
