A lost Nayland to London route rediscovered?

The obelisk in Nayland (Stoke-by-Nayland), Suffolk includes mileages to Colchester (6) and from London (55).  This posed a problem as the known mileage from London to Colchester was 51, which meant something was wrong.  From Nayland to London should be 57 miles and not the 55 indicated.  The answer to the problem of the lost 2 miles was resolved with the discovery of three milestones lying in the civil parishes of Great Horkesley and West Bergholt.  A route left what is now the A134 about a mile and a half south of Nayland, and wended its way to West Bergholt.  No further stones have been located but by careful measurement the route appears to have continued south from West Bergholt down Lexden Road, over New Bridge and along Chitts Hill and join the London to Colchester road between the 48th and 49th milestone at Lexden.
